I have tutored over 400 students!
This might be a bold statement to make, but it's an accurate one. Throughout the last 6 years, I have worked with many students of all grade levels, with varying abilities and needs. But there is one thing that all of these students have in common: the education system in Ontario is neglecting them, and it all started in elementary school. The new system advocates learning by rote, but it doesn't encourage the students to learn the basic fundamentals of math, science and english. Students end up reciting information by memory and are promoted to the next grade on that alone. However, as they got older, this method of "learning" is more detrimental than beneficial, and they quickly discover that there is too much information to memorize. Around the time they complete elementary school and begin high school, students are completely overwhelmed with the amount of work involved, both at school and at home.
This is why students and teachers alike will say that the hurdle between 8th and 9th grade is the most difficult. In high school, the students are expected to understand and have already mastered the basics, although they weren't taught it. The struggle to maintain their marks often ends in disappointment, confusion, frustration, discouragement and even newfound anxiety. At Affinity Tutoring, it is my goal to establish a solid foundation to build the student's knowledge, which helps to raise their level of confidence. With my approach, students can learn to stop memorizing answers and instead grasp the ideas associated with the question at hand, consider the underlying ideas, and apply the basic concepts. In this way, the students are able to answer questions that are unfamiliar to them. I have seen countless students flourish with my tutoring techniques, and a great deal of them have gone on to pursue careers in math or science - something that they themselves never thought could be possible.
That is the objective at Affinity Tutoring - to get back to basics. To nurture a student's natural ability to learn. To foster an affinity for school. And most of all, to promote an affinity for education.
